Author's Reflections- Comic #390

After a couple comics that felt flat to me I redeemed myself with this one (in my opinion anyway). I always saw the three Conehead Seekers to be the muscle of the group, and one of their best portrayals in the Generation 1 cartoon was an episode in which they essentially fill the roles of mobsters, on a planet to collect debts from a gambling ring. That idea stuck with me and I thought it would be a great idea to have them fulfill that role again, but be completely terrible at it. The tagline “Hired Goons: Goons for Hire” is still hilarious to me, though it never really resonated with the readers like it did with me. There are also some great Acid Storm moments here, sometimes I struggled with writing dialogue for him since I wanted him to sound incredibly intelligent without going overboard with the thesaurus. I think I hit a pretty good happy medium here.

I tried my best to make great characters out of Grindcore and Big Daddy but never quite hit the mark I was aiming for. I think their characterizations were decent ideas but the execution left much to be desired. There’s some decent material here in this comic but it never quite felt complete from what I really wanted to do with them. Hound’s translation of the main comic’s dialogue is good, and really is a perfect summarization of what happened.

I’m not sure why I felt the need to label this comic as a spotlight of both Silverbolt AND Powerglide since the plot entirely revolves around Silverbolt and his fear of heights. But otherwise this was a decent comic, something I’d put in the middle of the spectrum…nothing spectacular but not horrible either. The best line of dialogue is probably Hot Shot confusing pizzazz with pizza.

I really can’t recall what inspired this comic but I like it from start to finish. I’m still happy with the basic idea, the chosen characters, the dialogue and even the execution (which can sometimes end up different than what I have pictured in my head). Megatron’s line “Good temp…great temp” was an inside joke based on this guy one of my friends who played football used to tell us about that would come around and refer to everyone as a “Good guy…great guy.” I’d put things like that into the comic simply to amuse myself.

I mainly wanted to feature Sunstorm in this comic, and show that I was attempting to include him as a member of the Seekers but he was so one-dimension and flat I couldn’t think of much to do with him. I like the setup and the turnaround at the end but I’ll never say this was one of my better ideas.
