Author's Reflections- Comic #394

I think this particular comic was pretty good for what it is, but it probably would have been a little bit better if I hadn’t used this and the Bluestreak one in the same set of spotlights, since they’re very similar. But I do like the idea here and the dialogue. Just like the Primes, I really wanted to use the other Megatrons more and this was one of the better instances, especially since Dewey was, at this point, the one used least of all.

I remember I went back and forth for the longest time about whether to feature some of the Knockoffs or give the spotlight comic to some other obscure character but I made the choice to give it to the Champions and I’m forever grateful that I did. Whereas a lot of these spotlight comics fall into that middle spectrum, this is one that I knew would be fantastic from the moment of inception. The script went through a couple changes but the idea remained the same: The Champions really thought of themselves as Knockora-Offina’s greatest heroes but when it came down to it they weren’t that much more than children playing make believe. I wanted them to set up the story with these grand backgrounds to enhance their delusions of grandeur, and I have to pay myself on the back…I really think the pictures I used worked so perfectly for what was going on. Again, for someone with my ridiculously remedial photoshopping abilities, a comic that turned out like this was something to be celebrated. To enhance the pictures I sent them through  posterize effect on a photo editing program to make the cut-and-pasted pictures and background really mesh, and I think it really added to the story. I was extremely excited to use Shortround’s fan-created ‘toilet mode’. I’d place this very high on my list of favorite comics.

This should have just been a spotlight featuring Doughboy since he got all of the truly great material. I just desperately wanted to do something with the other Primes that brought them back from obscurity, but other than Doughboy’s stereotypical eating disorder that rarely happened the way I envisioned it. I knew the spotlight title was completely horrible so I felt the need to make fun of it myself before anyone else could.

I had hoped featuring Ultra Magnus, Springer and Kup would spark something good like back in the days of them being locked in the Dinobots’ closet but I can’t say I really achieved that. Like Grindcore and Big Daddy’s spotlight in comic #389 there are some decent moments but nothing that really succeeded in accomplishing what I had hoped to. I do like that Kup questioned why Springer and Ultra Magnus were able to reminisce but he always got shut down when he did it.
