Author's Reflections- Comic #427

Optimus in a hot tub, good back and forth dialogue, referencing Bumblebee’s “upgrade”…there’s not much here but it was a good comic.

One of the things about this comic that was both a blessing and a curse was the sheer simplicity I prided myself on, especially concerning the backdrop. It made things very easy for me, and it even made for some great jokes, making fun of myself for it. But it could absolutely get monotonous. Getting a different perspective was something I really liked doing but I tried not to do it TOO much in order to make comics like this really stand out. I liked writing this from Maynard’s perspective, seeing exactly what was going on from his point of view during the mode switch. This is definitely one of my favorite comics to come out of this storyline. It’s still incredibly simple but it came together very well.

This comic started the ‘B’ story featuring the commentary trio. I always enjoyed being able to give them their own little arc while simultaneously maintaining their role at the end of each comic.

I didn’t feel the need to have another Blackarachnia/ Waspinator comic, and since this was the bookend comic of this particular week I didn’t want to do anything that would cause a cliffhanger so a one-off like this was exactly what was needed. It’s been said, but I can’t say enough how much I loved writing for Skywarp.

These comics with Blackarachnia and Waspinator were really fun for me to write since I’m sure a huge fan of the Beast Wars cartoon. Similar to comics #416-420, there’s not much happening or the plot being moved, it was just simple dialogue to really feature these characters. Any comic heavily featuring Waspinator I automatically loved, even if the rest of the comic was nothing terribly special.

The Decepticons’ side of the big upgrading storyline had wrapped up for the most part so I wanted to start planting the seeds for the eventual storyline featuring Blackarachnia. I wanted to finish the Maynard/ Upgrade Saga first but it was good to lay down some initial groundwork. This comic was one that was very easy to write just using the basic characterizations each character already had. Again, comics like these really wrote themselves. The pose I got out of Waspinator in the eighth panel (where Blackarachnia is slapping him) turned out great.

Rather than take the time to feature all the newly upgraded Decepticons on their own, I decided it would be better to just unveil them all at once. I didn’t have plans for most of them down the road save for being used as background fodder so it just didn’t make sense to make a big deal out of all of them. Besides, this storyline was all about cranking out as many upgrades as fast as I possibly could so it was fitting to rush things along.

The way Megatron divided the new characters up into three groups provided for a bit of comedy as well as giving a tiny bit of foreshadowing about who was really going to be featured in future comics. Granted, that wasn’t a hard and fast rule since not all of these characters got much screen time at all (spoilers, haha!). It works for what it is.
